Beauty
“Who can afford to live without beauty?
Beauty fills us with passion,
it graces us with joy and lights up our existence.
A landscape, a piece of music, a film-a dance,
suddenly all dreariness is gone. We are left bewitched, we are dazzled.
If we are lost in dark despair,
Beauty takes us back to Center.”

Aromatherapy Rose Otto and Islam
Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina was a Persian great thinker of the time. Amongst his many contributions to both eastern and western civilization are medical writings that continued to be used to study medicine up until the 17th century in Europe. Ibn Sina also invented the process of steam distillation, upon which, modern aromatherapy is based. Ibn Sina is more commonly known in the west by his Latinized name Avicenna. Rose Water was the scent he perfected. There is a saying that the Prophet spoke of his preference for prayer, wives and scents. Scents were an integral part of wellness for body and spirit. Rose water continues to be popular for purifying sacred spaces, personal hygiene, and in cuisine. Roses are full of antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins and are soothing to both the nervous system as well as good for skin conditions-especially aging skin.

Rose Water Bed Spritz Recipe
- Spray bottle
- Distilled water
- 1-2 drops Rose Otto oil
Fill bottle with water, add oils and spray on bed linen for a lovely, relaxing, (and potentially romantic) aroma.
For a more cost effective alternative, pick up rose water in the international aisle at the grocery store. Mix 1/3 rose water into 2/3 distilled water and spritz away to your heart’s content.

We, in the West, owe a great debt to Abu ‘Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina and to others of the Arab world that gave us many of the everyday things we take for granted like mathematics. Our dominant system of numbers is no longer Roman Numerals but Arabic. Besides Algebra, there is a whole A-list of contributions from the Islamic world: astronomy, astrology, architecture, alchemy (which is the basis of chemistry), the arts, the Arabica coffee bean, and, of course, aromatherapy.
PS
Last night I attended a vigil at the Islamic Centre. Afterwards we lit candles outside of the mosque and tried to keep them from blowing out in the wind- which they did. We would walk over to another person whose flame was still lit and revive our own. Sometimes a stranger would come to us and light their candle from ours. It was a dance of light and dark in the chilly winter evening air. It struck me that this is really what life is all about these days. Sometimes, we need a light from another , even a perfect stranger, to boost ourselves. Sometimes, we are the light for others in troubling times. It goes back and forth.

new directions
Wondering why there hasn’t been a new newsletter in a while?
Well, I went back to school to study aromatherapy, reflexology and holistic nutrition. My coaching and jewelry business ventures are temporarily on the back burner while I focus on my courses, case studies and getting certified.
Stay tuned. There are many more good things to come. My brain is percolating already with new ideas on how to bring it all together.

Spirits of Brazil
Water is an integral part of Brazilian spirituality, which is not surprising given the imposing presence of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Amazon River. In pre-Columbian days, the indigenous Tupi and Guarani peoples told stories of a terrifying water serpent named mboiaçu.
(Photo Credit Iara- Lady of the Brazilian Waters www.pinterest.com )
With the arrival of Europeans, the water snake tale morphed into a mermaid who drew unsuspecting men into the jungle where they disappeared. Amongst the native population, mothers are held in esteem. Iara was the bad mother archetype. Yemanya, the African mother of the waters was the good nurturing mother who protected women and children. Even today, for the New Year, little boat processions are sent out on the ocean in honour of Yemanya.
Water issues have been at the forefront of Olympic news in Rio this summer: pollution so bad that rowers got sick from the ocean, mysterious green algae in the diving pool, raw sewage flowing into beaches, water bred insect Zika virus, beachside muggings and of course, the scandal of the dishonest American swimmer with his fishy tale. Was Iara expressing her ancient sea serpent ire?
Rock Star of the Month- Vogel Crystals
Vogel Crystals are natural crystals that have been carved to refine their energy. Marcel Vogel noticed that when pointing a double terminated quartz crystal at a person that the thoughts and feeling held by the holder of the crystal were magnified when received by the recipient. Vogel had worked at IBM in Silicon Valley and was the man behind liquid crystal displays (LCD) and magnetic disk drive coatings amongst other things. He was also fascinated by luminescence and held many patents. In carving his Vogel Crystals to intentionally focus the trajectory of the point to transmit universal life force energy, he followed sacred geometry measurement used in the Egyptian Pyramids (51 degrees, 51 minutes, 51 seconds) and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.
The originals are Vogels with 4, 6, 8 and 13 lines carved along the side. Fours work on the physical body, sixes work on the emotional, eights work on deep shock and severe trauma, while thirteens are used for past life healing of trauma. Since them there are many other combinations of carvings. Vogel used the piezo-electric nature of the crystal in breathing in with intention to heal and pinched the crystal between fingers to eject an electrical pulse out of the “masculine” side of the crystal that will be received either by self or another.

For Vogel, the thymus gland was the focal point of the healing. The thymus is considered by some to be the seat of the soul and is responsible for immune function. Interestingly, the thymus is larger in children who are developing their immunity to their environment and it becomes smaller in adults as we age.

In Crystal Bed therapy, Vogel Crystals are placed in front of coloured lights and pointed at each of the main seven chakras in the human body while the person lies on a healing bed. The Entity then directs universal life force healing energy through the crystals targeted at the key healing centres on the body.
Some equate this to the healing temples of Atlantis where crystal therapy was used to relax and balance the body so that it could heal itself naturally. Brazil is one of the locations where Atlantians resettled after the flood. Some of the others are Greece, Egypt, India, and the Yucatan.

July 2016 Sacred Stones News
In Hawaii, the Kilauea volcano is currently spewing lava which has now reached into the ocean for the first time since 2013. Around the world, there is a lot of unsettling energy. I firmly believe that the more light of higher human consciousness increases, the more we see a reaction from the other side.
If you are feeling energetically overwhelmed by recent events, Sonia Choquette put out a nice video this week that I found via spirit library and found to be very helpful.

For me, I am finding peace in the flowering presence of my Hibiscus.
Hibiscus flowers open in the morning and last one day. By evening they are closed back up and the next morning you will find they have fallen off the tree. They are truly ephemeral- short lived, but glorious in that short life. It was a fleeting promise of hope.
Have a cup of tea and enjoy the read.

Rock Star of the Month- Basalt
Also, known as Lava Stone, Basalt is an igneous rock formed from cooled magma after a volcanic eruption. Being volcanic in origin, it is a stone that evokes the element of fire. For those who feel indecisive or lack direction and clarity, it can stoke the fire in the belly to fuel one’s passion.
Usually, it is found in the ocean. Polynesian islands, like those in Hawaii have formed out of the ocean on layers of built up lava. Likewise, Basalt has an earthy grounding effect. It is, after all, the foundation formed from the basement of our planet.
Basalt is generally black and porous, but some other tones do exist that are coloured by various minerals. The pores come from the gas bubbles that pop after exiting the volcanic crater. Obsidian is also a volcanic rock formed from lava spilling into the ocean and cooling so rapidly that crystals do not have time to form. It is more glassy and glossy than Basalt. Since there are no gas bubbles, it is a smooth stone. Other oceanic vulcanite stones include Rhyolite and Ocean Jasper (a personal favorite of mine).
It is considered disrespectful to remove lava rock or even the sand from Hawaii. Many believe they are cursed by the fire goddess Pele for doing so and island post offices get many returned rocks from apologetic visitors after experiencing a string of bad luck. There is something to be said for not disturbing the elemental energy of an environment one visits. So, curse, or not, I would suggest it is good manners (and good karma) to not take what is not yours when you are a guest there or anywhere else.

St. John’s Day
The feast of John the Baptist coincides with the Summer Solstice. In Northern Europe, it was celebrated traditionally on the eve of Midsummer, but could fall anywhere between June 21-26. In Sweden, Midsummer festivities occur on the Friday night closest to Midsummer.
Read the whole newsletter here:
On St. John’s Eve in Europe, women gathered medicinal herbs. Herbs picked on this sacred night would be especially potent at warding off evil. Yarrow, mallow, rue, mint, fennel, rosemary, wormwood, and, of course, St. John’s Wort were collected.
In Italy, green walnuts were harvested on this night to create a liqueur called Nocino to ward off witches, as it was believed they gathered around walnut trees. In Denmark, on Sank Hans Aften, a witch effigy is prepared by the children and burnt on the fire. The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky wrote music about St. John’s Eve and dispelling a gathering of witches on a bare mountain. His inspiration was Russian folklore. Sadly, his composition was never performed during his lifetime, but was later made famous by Walt Disney in the 1940 movie Fantasia. You can view the creepy scene for Night on Bald Mountain here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLCuL-K39eQ.
Disney, for better or for worse, has become a key modern purveyor of mythology for recent generations. Joseph Campbell said each new generation has to reinvent the basic archetypes of the human experience to make it relevant to their own culture.
In North America, there are still post-colonial remnants of Midsummer St. John’s Eve. Christopher Columbus originally named Puerto Rico the island of San Juan Bautista. Marie Laveau, the renowned Creole Voodoo priestess is said to have attracted thousands to her Bayou St. John Midsummer rituals in New Orleans. Saint Jean was officially declared the patron saint of French Canadians by Pope Pius in 1908; however celebrations for the saint first occurred almost 400 years, and really became popular as a Gallic response to Montreal’s Irish St Patrick’s Day celebrations two hundred years ago. La fete Saint-Jean-Baptiste is now more of a secular provincial holiday in Quebec

Inner Child
In her book Taming your Outer Child, Susan Anderson describes the Outer Child as the behavioural “evil twin” of the innocent Inner Child within all of us.
She explains how we abandon our Inner Child early in life by taking on the beliefs of others, internalizing criticism, conforming, belittling and blaming ourselves. We continue to abandon ourselves as adults when we give in, silence ourselves, stuff down our true values, ignore our intuition, and sacrifice our integrity in jobs or relationships. The Inner Child has generalized needs- to be loved, to feel valued, to have fun etc. The Outer Child is the part of us that over-indulges, pouts, overreacts, self-sabotages, throws a hissy fit, demands instant gratification in specific ways, gets addicted, puts own demands first without care for the greater cost. In cartoons, Outer shows up as a little red devil whispering temptations in our ear. Self-care is reviving our authentic Inner being through (not so random) acts of wellness. Self-indulgence, however, is ego driven, detrimental and demanding.
Practice makes Progress
| Example:
My goal is to clean my kitchen. Outer distracts me through procrastination, convincing me to take a break and watch TV after dinner instead of doing the dishes, luring me to check my emails, complaining why nobody helps me and convincing me there is too much to do and it will never get done anyway. I will set the stove timer to work for 20 minutes- 20 min of washing dishes and 20 min of TV. I will remind Outer that if we focus for a short time, we can get a lot done then play in peace later. |
